Winnebago was created on 1840 from Brown, Calumet, Fond du Lac and Marquette Counties. The County Seat is Oshkosh . The County was named for the Indian tribe that had formerly lived in this vicinity. The word was an Algonquian term applied to the Siouan tribe, and signified, "people dwelling by the fetid or ill-smelling water" (possibly a sulphur spring).

Counties adjacent to Winnebago County are Waupaca County (northwest), Outagamie County (northeast), Calumet County (east), Fond du Lac County (south), Green Lake County (southwest), Waushara County (west). Winnebago County Cities Include Appleton, Menasha, Neenah, Omro, Oshkosh. Towns Include Algoma, Black Wolf, Clayton, Menasha, Neenah, Nekimi, Nepeuskun, Omro, Oshkosh, Poygan, Rushford, Utica, Vinland, Winchester, Winneconne, Wolf River. Villages Include Winneconne.

All Departments below can be contacted by clicking the link below for each department. NOTE: The record dates below are from the earliest date to present time. Winnebago County was attached (C/J)-Brown County, 1840–42; (J)-Brown County, 1842–44; Fond du Lac County, 1844–47. Some early records may be found there.

Winnebago County Register of Deeds Office has Birth Records from 18?, Marriage Records from 18?, Death Records from 18? and Land Records from 1837.

In 1848 the Wisconsin Constitution established the Register of Deeds as a permanent element of the County level of governmental structure. The purpose of the Winnebago County Register of Deeds is to provide official record keeping for Records or files land record documents authorized by law, such as deeds, mortgages, satisfactions, certified survey maps, plats and Federal Tax liens. Files and indexes Birth, Death and Marriage records, Military Discharges, and issues certified copies upon request.

Winnebago County Register in Probate Office has Probate Records from 1838.

It is the responsibility of the Register in Probate to maintain and update files regarding probate of estates, guardianships, protective placements, adoptions and mental commitments. This is a statutory office with the position of Register in Probate filled by judicial appointment.

Winnebago County Clerk of Court Office has Court Records from 1848.

The Clerk of Court is part of the Judicial Branch of local government and as such is required to maintain a record of all documents filed with the courts, keep a record of all court proceedings, and collect various fines and forfeitures ordered by the court and specified by statute.

Obituaries can vary in the amount of information they contain, but many of them are genealogical goldmines, including information such as names, dates, places of birth and death, marriage information, and family relationships.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Winnebago County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Winnebago County Tombstone Transcription Project.

The Wisconsin Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Wisconsin in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Wisconsin in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Wisconsin are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Wisconsin and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.

Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Wisconsin. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. A considerable number have been printed in the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Extended History

 

From: Handbook of Wisconsin by S. Silas, 1855, pg. 109-110

Is on the west side of the Lake of the same name, and from its location, has the best advantage of inland commerce of any County in Wisconsin. Into this Lake flows the Fox, the largest and most easily navigated river in the State. The Wolf, the main stream instead of the Upper Fox, is also navigable for a great distance, and the increased business prophecies a large trade to centre around Lake Winnebago. The soil of the County is excellent; the eastern part, along the Lake Shore, is heavily timbered; the western, prairie and openings. The region along the Fox is marsh, extending from half to two miles back, and in no case, in its whole course through the County, has it high banks on both sides, except at Oshkosh. There is some Government land not yet taken.

Oshkosh is the County Seat, and the largest place in the State north of Fond du Lac. It is near the mouth of the Fox, and well situated to command a large trade. Several steam saw mills are located here, and along the Lake Shore employed in manufacturing lumber from logs floated down the Wolf.

Winneconne, on the Wolf, at the only crossing place, on account of the marsh, has a good bridge for crossing, and is a growing village.

Neenah and Menasha, on opposite sides of the Fox, at its outlet, are both places of note, and flourishing. The Fox is here divided into two streams, by Doty's Island, on both sides of which are falls, creating good and abundant power, which are partly improved for manufacturing purposes. The Fox River Improvement has its lower terminus at Menasha. This improvement consists in building canals around some of the rapids, and by creating slack water above them, thus rendering the whole stream navigable from Lake Winnebago to Green Bay.

The Green Bay district land office is at Menash (sic), and the whole of Winnebago County is in that district.
